Okpeche, a community located in Bekwarra Local Government Area, sits several kilometres away from major urban centres, making access to markets, healthcare, and education extremely difficult, especially during the rainy season.
With no functional bridge or motorable road, locals say they are often forced to rely on risky alternatives just to cross rivers and connect with neighbouring communities.
Across Cross River and similar rural regions, such conditions are not new. Reports have shown that many communities depend on locally constructed wooden or bamboo bridges, which often deteriorate quickly and pose serious risks to lives and livelihoods.
In Okpeche, the situation appears to have reached a breaking point, prompting youths and community members to mobilize resources, cut bamboo, and begin erecting a makeshift hanging bridge.
While the effort reflects the resilience and unity of the people, it also raises serious concerns about safety, durability, and the continued neglect of rural infrastructure.
Experiences from other Nigerian communities show that such bamboo structures are often temporary solutions, frequently destroyed by flooding or heavy rainfall, sometimes leading to tragic incidents.
