The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has defended its decision to pick former Cross River State Governor, Donald Duke, as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, describing him as the right figure to provide a new leadership alternative for Nigeria.
The party said Duke’s experience, leadership record and public profile were among the factors considered before his emergence as the party’s candidate.
The decision followed the conclusion of the party’s internal electoral process and the review of the report of its Primaries Appeal Committee, which was later approved by the National Working Committee (NWC).
PRP National Publicity Secretary, Muhammed Ishaq, announced that the party had affirmed Duke as its validly elected presidential candidate, alongside clearing other candidates for various elective positions ahead of the 2027 polls.
The party stated that its choice was driven by the need for credible leadership, national transformation and a candidate capable of offering Nigerians a different political direction.
Duke, who governed Cross River State from 1999 to 2007, returns to the presidential race after previous attempts, including his 2019 presidential bid under another platform.
The PRP also disclosed that it would field 420 candidates across different positions in the 2027 elections, insisting that the move reflects its commitment to expanding political participation and strengthening internal democracy.
The emergence of Duke has already triggered political discussions, with supporters describing him as an experienced technocrat with a development-focused background, while critics question whether the PRP has the national structure required to challenge Nigeria’s dominant political parties.
With the 2027 election season gradually taking shape, Duke’s candidacy is expected to add another dimension to the contest for Nigeria’s presidency.
