U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 100% tariff on imports from any country that introduces a Digital Services Tax (DST) targeting American technology companies, escalating trade tensions between the United States and Europe.
Trump made the announcement through his Truth Social platform, warning that any nation imposing such taxes on U.S. digital firms would immediately face punitive tariffs on goods exported to the United States. He also declared that the proposed tariffs would override any existing or future trade agreements with affected countries.
The warning is aimed primarily at members of the European Union, where several countries either already have digital services taxes or are considering expanding them. The U.S. government has long argued that these taxes unfairly single out American technology giants such as Google, Apple, Meta and Amazon.
The European Commission responded by insisting that its tax policies are non-discriminatory and apply equally to qualifying companies, regardless of nationality. EU officials also warned they would respond firmly to any unilateral trade measures imposed by Washington.
The latest threat comes despite ongoing efforts by both sides to ease trade tensions through previous tariff negotiations. Analysts say the dispute could spark another round of trade conflicts between the world's two largest economic blocs if neither side backs down.
