Barely a few days after five people died in a devastating landslide in Calabar, another tragedy has struck the Cross River State capital, claiming the life of one more resident.
The latest incident happened after heavy rainfall triggered another landslide in a vulnerable area of the city, raising fresh fears among residents who have continued to live under the threat of collapsing soil and flooding. Emergency responders and residents rushed to the scene in an effort to rescue the victim, but the person was later confirmed dead.
The new disaster has increased concerns over the safety of people living around erosion-prone communities in Calabar. Many residents say they have repeatedly warned about the danger posed by unstable hillsides, blocked drainage channels and unchecked development in high-risk areas.
The latest death comes just days after another landslide killed five people, leaving families in mourning and forcing many residents to abandon their homes for fear of further disasters. The back-to-back incidents have sparked renewed calls for the Cross River State Government and relevant emergency agencies to urgently identify dangerous locations, evacuate residents where necessary and begin permanent erosion control projects.
Community leaders have also appealed to residents to avoid living or building on unstable slopes, especially during the peak of the rainy season, while experts continue to warn that prolonged rainfall could trigger more landslides if preventive measures are not taken.
As investigations continue, many residents are demanding immediate government intervention to prevent more lives from being lost to what they describe as a recurring and avoidable tragedy.
