The Cross River State Government has provided financial assistance to families who lost loved ones during the recent flood and landslide disasters in Calabar, reaffirming its commitment to supporting victims of natural disasters across the state.
The financial support was presented on behalf of Governor Bassey Edet Otu by the Special Adviser to the Governor on General Duties, Barr. Ekpenyong Akiba, during a brief ceremony held in Calabar in collaboration with the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (CR-SEMA).
Beneficiaries included Mr. Kingsley Etim, who lost his four children in the devastating Ikot Anwatim landslide; Miss Sunday Jennifer, whose father died while attempting to rescue the trapped children; and Mrs. Chinonso Dominic, whose one-month-old baby was swept away by floodwaters along Elijah Henshaw Street in Calabar.
Speaking during the presentation, Barr. Akiba conveyed Governor Otu's heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, stressing that no amount of financial assistance could replace the lives lost. He explained that the support was meant to ease the immediate burden on the affected families and assure them that the state government shares in their grief.
According to him, Governor Otu was deeply saddened by the tragedies and immediately directed that assistance be provided to the victims. He also assured residents that the government would continue to strengthen disaster response efforts while implementing measures to protect lives and property across Cross River State.
Director-General of CR-SEMA, Mr. Efa Nyong, sympathized with the affected families and noted that the agency has remained actively involved in disaster response through rapid assessments, evacuation of displaced persons, temporary shelter support and collaboration with humanitarian organisations, including the Nigerian Red Cross and Humanity Without Borders Empowerment Initiative.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr. Kingsley Etim expressed gratitude to Governor Otu for fulfilling his promise to assist the affected families. He described the financial support as a compassionate gesture that has given them hope despite the painful loss they continue to endure.
