Governor Bassey Edet Otu has fulfilled his promise to councillors across Cross River State by paying a ₦10 million car grant to each of the state's 196 councillors, a move aimed at improving their effectiveness in delivering democratic dividends at the grassroots.
The payment, which has been widely welcomed by beneficiaries, is expected to enhance the mobility and capacity of councillors in carrying out their legislative, oversight and constituency responsibilities across the 18 local government areas.
Reacting to the development, the Cross River State Councillors' Forum, in a statement dated July 9, 2026, expressed profound appreciation to Governor Otu for approving and ensuring the successful disbursement of the grants.
The appreciation message, signed by the Chairman of the Forum, Hon. Princess Magdalene Ekpe, described the governor's action as a demonstration of his commitment to strengthening grassroots governance and improving the welfare of elected representatives.
According to the forum, the governor's decision will enable councillors to serve their constituents more effectively, especially in rural communities where transportation remains a major challenge.
The councillors praised Governor Otu's people-first leadership style and commitment to inclusive governance, noting that the intervention would boost their productivity and improve service delivery at the local government level.
The forum also reaffirmed its continued support for the governor's administration and pledged to work towards the successful implementation of government policies and programmes aimed at promoting sustainable development and prosperity across Cross River State.
