The Cross River State Police Command has dismissed reports linking it to the investigation of the viral incident involving the alleged owner of an anonymous Snapchat account in Calabar.

The clarification follows widespread social media reports claiming that a popular anonymous Snapchat account owner was identified and taken into custody after allegedly sharing an anonymous question link on the platform. The reports also alleged that she was confronted, assaulted and publicly humiliated by individuals who believed anonymous comments made through the link were directed at them.

However, reacting to the growing public discussion, the Cross River State Police Command said the matter is not being investigated by the Nigeria Police Force.

In an official statement, the Command said credible information available to it indicates that the case is currently under investigation by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Cross River State.

The police therefore urged members of the public to avoid spreading misinformation or wrongly attributing the investigation to the Police, stressing that the appropriate security agency should be allowed to carry out its lawful responsibilities without interference.

The Command also appealed to residents to rely on verified information from official sources, especially on sensitive matters attracting widespread public attention.

The incident has generated intense reactions across social media, with many users expressing concern over the alleged assault and public humiliation reported online. As of the time of filing this report, the Department of State Services (DSS) has not issued an official public statement on the matter.
