It was a busy day of infrastructure development and project inspections across Cross River State on Saturday, July 4, 2026, as the administration of Governor Bassey Otu continued to advance its "People-First" agenda through several landmark activities carried out on behalf of the Governor by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Peter Odey.
The day's activities began in Bekwarra Local Government Area, where the Deputy Governor officially performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the 10-kilometre Ugboro–Upah–Afrike Road.
The road project is expected to improve movement within the communities, reduce travel time, open up rural areas, and make it easier for farmers to transport agricultural produce to markets. Residents are also expected to benefit from better access to healthcare, education, and other essential services once the project is completed.
The government said the road forms part of its commitment to ensuring that development reaches every part of Cross River State, especially rural communities that have long required better road infrastructure.
From Bekwarra, the Deputy Governor proceeded to Ikom Local Government Area, where he represented Governor Bassey Otu at the official flag-off of the construction of 1,500 units of affordable housing.
The housing project is one of the largest government-backed housing initiatives in the state in recent years. It is designed to provide decent and affordable homes for families, reduce the housing deficit, create employment opportunities during construction, and support urban development within the Central Senatorial District.
Government officials said the initiative demonstrates the administration's determination to improve the welfare of residents by making quality housing more accessible.
The Deputy Governor also carried out an inspection of several ongoing and completed infrastructure projects in Ogoja Local Government Area.
Among the projects inspected was the Igoli–Okuku Road, where he assessed the progress of work and expressed satisfaction with efforts to improve the state's road network.
He also inspected the reconstructed and expanded Igoli–Abakpa Bridge, a strategic project completed by the Cross River State Government to improve connectivity, ensure safer movement of people and goods, and strengthen transportation within the area.
The inspection tour continued to Stadium Road in Ogoja, another road project constructed by the state government. The Deputy Governor reviewed the quality of work and reaffirmed the administration's commitment to delivering durable infrastructure that will benefit residents for many years.
Speaking during the various engagements, the Deputy Governor reiterated that Governor Bassey Otu remains committed to delivering the dividends of democracy across all three senatorial districts. He said the administration will continue investing in roads, bridges, housing, and other critical infrastructure aimed at improving the quality of life for Cross Riverians.
The series of project flag-offs and inspections reflects the state's ongoing drive to expand infrastructure, stimulate economic growth, improve transportation, create jobs, and enhance living standards across both rural and urban communities.
Residents described the day's activities as another demonstration of the government's resolve to sustain development projects across Cross River State despite prevailing economic challenges.
