"This Hospital Keeps Hope Alive" — Peter Obi Hails Ogoja Mission Hospital, Gives ₦10m Support

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, has donated ₦10 million to the Catholic Maternity Hospital Moniaya, Ogoja Local Government Area of Cross River State, as part of efforts to support healthcare delivery in the country.

Peter Obi made the donation during a visit to the hospital on Saturday while travelling from Enugu to Ogoja and Yala Local Government Areas.

Speaking during the visit, Obi described the Catholic Maternity Hospital as a place that has continued to keep hope alive for thousands of women and newborn babies despite operating with limited resources.

According to him, the decades-old hospital remains one of the few major maternity centres serving the entire Ogoja area, carrying a huge burden of providing maternal healthcare.

Obi expressed concern over Nigeria's high maternal and infant mortality rates, saying the country still ranks among the nations with the highest number of deaths involving pregnant women and newborn babies.

He noted that despite Nigeria's population being smaller than countries like China and India, the country continues to record preventable maternal and child deaths, stressing that every statistic represents real families who have suffered painful losses.

The former Anambra State governor also commended the hospital for operating a Tuberculosis and Leprosy Centre, describing such specialised healthcare services as increasingly rare and important to rural communities.

To support the hospital's work, Obi presented a donation of ₦10 million and pledged to continue partnering with the institution.

He also called on the Federal Government, state governments, private organisations, and well-meaning Nigerians to support mission hospitals and other faith-based health institutions, saying they play a critical role in delivering healthcare, especially in underserved communities.

According to him, investing in healthcare and education remains one of the surest ways to build a better future for Nigeria.

Residents and healthcare workers are expected to welcome the donation, which is expected to assist the hospital in improving its services and continuing its mission of caring for mothers, newborns, and other patients across Ogoja and neighbouring communities.
