The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has launched a major education technology initiative aimed at accelerating innovation and improving access to quality learning across Africa. Through its flagship timbuktoo EdTech Hub, the UNDP this week opened applications for a Pan-African incubation programme designed to support startups developing digital solutions for education.
The initiative is expected to strengthen education systems by providing young African innovators with funding opportunities, technical support, mentorship and access to investors. It comes at a time when millions of children and young people across Africa continue to face barriers to quality education, while the continent's rapidly growing youth population demands new approaches to learning and skills development.
According to the UNDP, the programme will identify high-potential startups capable of transforming classrooms through technology. Successful applicants will participate in an intensive incubation programme where they will refine their products, receive expert guidance and build scalable solutions that can be deployed across multiple African countries.
The programme focuses on digital learning platforms, artificial intelligence in education, vocational skills training, teacher support technologies, educational management systems and other innovative tools capable of improving learning outcomes.
UNDP noted that Africa has more than 100 million young people in need of inclusive, quality education that reflects local realities. By supporting African entrepreneurs, the organisation believes technology can become a powerful driver of educational transformation, job creation and economic growth across the continent.
Education experts say initiatives like the timbuktoo EdTech Hub could help bridge learning gaps created by inadequate infrastructure, teacher shortages and unequal access to educational resources. The programme also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4, which seeks to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all.
Applications are currently open to eligible African startups with innovative education technology solutions, marking another significant UN intervention aimed at supporting sustainable development across the continent.
