There are growing indications that the prolonged dispute at the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) could soon be resolved following a closed-door meeting between Governor Bassey Otu, the university's management, and representatives of the student body.
Speaking shortly after the meeting, the Vice Chancellor of UNICROSS, Prof. Francisca Bassey, described the engagement with the governor as fruitful and encouraging, expressing optimism that the crisis affecting academic activities was nearing resolution.
According to the Vice Chancellor, discussions with Governor Otu gave both the management and students renewed confidence that a lasting solution was within reach. She noted that the atmosphere after the meeting reflected the progress made, as both parties left without protests or disagreements.
"We had fruitful discussions, and it was very encouraging. We believe there is light at the end of the tunnel, and we are very hopeful," she said.
Prof. Bassey further explained that the meeting brought together the university management and student representatives with the governor, adding that the positive outcome has renewed hope across the institution.
Also speaking after the meeting, the Student Union President, Oga Favour, welcomed the outcome of the engagement, describing it as productive and reassuring for the entire student community.
He said students now have genuine reasons to believe they will soon return to their classrooms, urging them to remain calm while awaiting the implementation of the governor's assurances.
"We are very hopeful of returning to our classrooms very soon. I also want to encourage my fellow students to remain calm because the Governor has given us assurances that we will be back in our classrooms very soon," he said.
The latest development is expected to boost confidence among students, parents and staff who have been anxiously awaiting a resolution to the strike that has disrupted academic activities at the state-owned university.
Although no official date has yet been announced for the suspension of the strike or the resumption of lectures, the outcome of the meeting has raised expectations that normal academic activities could resume once all outstanding issues are concluded.
