Former Cross River State Governor and 2027 presidential candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Donald Duke, has called on opposition politicians in Nigeria to put aside their personal interests and work together if they want to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 election.
Duke made the call while speaking on the political situation in the country and preparations for the 2027 general elections.
According to the former governor, the opposition has a chance of giving the APC a serious challenge, but this can only happen if politicians who are against the ruling party are ready to work together.
He said opposition politicians must be willing to “bury their egos” and put the interest of Nigeria above their individual ambitions.
Duke's message comes as political parties and politicians across the country are already positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 election, with discussions about possible alliances and cooperation among opposition groups becoming more intense.
For ordinary Nigerians, the issue is straightforward: if several opposition politicians want to challenge the APC but each person insists on pursuing his own interest, their votes could be divided and the ruling party could benefit from it.
Duke, who served as Cross River State governor from 1999 to 2007, is now preparing to contest the presidency under the PRP. He emerged as the party's presidential candidate after its primary election held in May 2026.
His emergence, however, has also faced a legal challenge from another PRP presidential aspirant, Yakubu Kingsley, who approached the Federal High Court in Abuja questioning the process that produced Duke as the party's candidate. The case is separate from Duke's latest call for opposition unity.
Duke's latest appeal is therefore coming at a time when opposition politicians are under pressure to decide whether they will go into the 2027 election separately or find a way to work together against the APC.
For Cross River voters who have followed Duke's political career, his return to the presidential race is also attracting attention, particularly because he remains one of the state's most prominent former political leaders.
His message to the opposition is clear: personal political ambitions should not be allowed to destroy the bigger plan to challenge the APC in 2027.
