A recent street survey carried out across the six local government areas of Cross River Central Senatorial District has placed Rt. Hon. Bassey Eko Ewa of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), ahead of his two major contenders in the 2027 senatorial race.
The survey, which focused on the popularity of three candidates; Bassey Eko Ewa of the NDC, John Ifere of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Oden Ewa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) sampled a total of 10,000 people across Abi, Boki, Etung, Ikom, Obubra and Yakurr Local Government Areas.
The exercise focused largely on ordinary residents, with particular attention given to young people and youths, alongside men and women across different communities and areas.
According to the figures from the survey, Bassey Eko Ewa received 60 percent of the overall preference, putting him clearly ahead of the other two candidates.
John Ifere came second with 25 percent, while Oden Ewa recorded 15 percent.
The figures show a 35-percentage-point difference between Bassey Eko Ewa and John Ifere, while the NDC candidate leads Oden Ewa by 45 percentage points.
The survey distribution covered 2,000 respondents in Abi, 2,500 in Boki, 2,500 in Ikom and 1,000 in Etung, while the remaining 2,000 respondents were shared between Obubra and Yakurr.
Across the areas covered, Bassey Eko Ewa appeared to enjoy stronger support in Yakurr, Abi, Obubra and Etung, while also recording noticeable support in parts of Boki and Ikom.
In Yakurr, the survey showed a strong showing for the NDC candidate, with his supporters making up a significant portion of those who indicated their preferred candidate.
The same pattern was reported in Abi, Obubra and Etung, where Bassey Eko Ewa was said to have maintained an advantage over the other two candidates.
His support was also recorded in several communities in Boki and Ikom, although the survey indicated that the contest was more closely divided in some wards and areas within those two LGAs.
For John Ifere, the survey showed stronger pockets of support in Obubra, some wards in Ikom and Etung, and a sizeable number of respondents in Boki.
His performance in Boki was described as one of the areas where he came closest to challenging the lead of Bassey Eko Ewa, with several respondents indicating support for the PDP candidate.
Oden Ewa, meanwhile, recorded his strongest showing in Yakurr, while also attracting support from some respondents in Ikom and Boki.
However, the overall figures from the survey placed him third among the three candidates tested.
The survey appears to suggest that while all three candidates have pockets of support across the district, Bassey Eko Ewa currently has the widest spread of support across the six LGAs, according to the responses gathered.
The result is particularly notable because the survey was not limited to party members or political office holders. It was focused on ordinary people on the streets, including youths, men and women, making it an attempt to gauge how the candidates are being received among residents at the grassroots.
However, the survey should be seen as an early indication of public preference and not an election result or scientific prediction of the 2027 outcome. Political campaigns are yet to fully unfold, and voter preferences can still change as candidates intensify their campaigns, unveil programmes and engage with communities.
For now, the figures from the Boki Blog Africa street survey give Bassey Eko Ewa a strong early advantage, with six out of every ten respondents choosing him ahead of John Ifere and Oden Ewa.
With the 2027 election still ahead, the coming months will determine whether the NDC candidate can maintain the lead shown in the survey or whether his opponents will succeed in closing the gap as political activities increase across Cross River Central.
