The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race and support former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi.
The call was made by the NDC’s Director of New Media and Strategic Communications, Theo Abu Agada, who argued that Atiku stepping aside could strengthen the opposition’s chances of challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.
Agada described Atiku as a “good and solid man” with a strong political legacy but said his continued presidential ambition could make opposition consolidation more difficult.
According to him, Atiku should put the broader interest of the opposition ahead of his personal ambition and support Obi as the candidate capable of uniting enough opposition forces to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development comes shortly after Atiku indicated that the 2027 presidential election would be his final attempt at becoming Nigeria’s president, regardless of whether he wins or loses.
The NDC's position therefore adds another layer to the growing debate among opposition politicians and supporters over who should lead the challenge against Tinubu in 2027.
While supporters of Atiku maintain that he remains an experienced national politician with the capacity to contest the presidency, Obi's supporters have continued to push for a stronger opposition movement around his candidacy.
The latest call also comes at a time when opposition parties and political figures are increasingly discussing alliances ahead of the 2027 election, with questions over whether leading contenders can sacrifice individual ambitions for a common presidential candidate.
For the NDC, however, the message to Atiku is direct: step aside and back Peter Obi if the opposition wants a stronger chance of removing Tinubu from office in 2027.
