A woman identified as Mrs. Atim Etim has died after she was allegedly set on fire by her son, Emmanuel Etim, in Ojuah community, Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The incident happened on Friday, August 14, 2026, following the death of Emmanuel’s daughter earlier that day.

According to a report by CrossRiverWatch, the son allegedly accused his mother of being responsible for the death of his daughter and confronted her at her residence.

The confrontation reportedly became violent when Emmanuel allegedly attempted to strangle his mother. One of his sisters reportedly intervened after the woman raised an alarm, forcing him to release her.

As the woman tried to escape, Emmanuel allegedly poured fuel on her and set her on fire.

Neighbours reportedly rushed to her aid and put out the fire before taking her to the hospital. She was later transferred to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) for further treatment.

However, her condition reportedly became critical, and she died on Wednesday, August 19.

The Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI), which became aware of the incident through a voice note circulated among pastors, has called for justice and a thorough investigation into the case.

The organisation also raised concern over the dangers of witchcraft accusations, particularly when such allegations are made against elderly people and other vulnerable members of society.

The Cross River State Police Command, through its spokesperson, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said efforts were ongoing to locate and arrest the suspect, who is reportedly at large.

The police said further information would be made available after the suspect is apprehended and the circumstances surrounding the incident are established.

BRCI has urged the authorities to ensure that the matter is properly investigated and that anyone found responsible for the woman's death faces justice.
