The Cross River State Police Command has arrested two elderly men over the alleged attempted rape of a 12-year-old girl in the Thomas Henshaw area of Calabar.
The suspects, identified as 68-year-old Moris Monday, a shoe repairer, and 70-year-old Asuquo Effiom, were arrested on Sunday, August 23, 2026, following a report made by the girl’s father.
According to the Police, the girl alleged that Monday lured her into his room on two separate occasions — August 13 and 14 — where he allegedly attempted to sexually assault her.
She further alleged that Effiom similarly lured her into his room on August 22 and attempted to sexually assault her.
Following the complaint, Police investigators reportedly moved to the Hokins Road area by Thomas Henshaw Junction, where the two suspects were found in the custody of community members before they were taken into Police custody.
The suspects have since made statements to investigators but denied the allegations.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Cross River State Command, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the case was being handled professionally and in line with the law.
> “The suspects have made statements to the Police and denied the allegations,” ASP Sunday Eitokpah, Police Public Relations Officer, Cross River State Command, said in a statement issued on Monday, August 24.
The PPRO added that the victim had been referred to a government-approved medical facility for medical examination as part of the investigation.
The matter has also been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet investigation and necessary legal action.
ASP Eitokpah assured members of the public that the Command would continue to handle the case professionally and in accordance with the law, adding that further developments would be communicated as the investigation progresses.
The case has drawn attention in the Thomas Henshaw community, particularly because of the age of the two suspects and the young age of the alleged victim.
The Police, however, have not declared the suspects guilty, and the allegations remain subject to investigation and due process. The two men are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.
