Calabar — A Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Calabar, Cross River State, has ordered the remand of businessman Denis Odama for seven days over allegations that he bullied Governor Bassey Otu online.
Odama, a Cross River-born businessman, was brought before the court on Thursday following his arrest in Lagos and subsequent transfer to Calabar.
The court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Mercy Ene, commenced proceedings at about 3:00pm and heard arguments from both the prosecution and defence teams.
The prosecution was represented by F. Okoi, Esq., while K. Omang, Esq., appeared for Odama.
According to the report, the court relied on powers granted under the Administration of Criminal Justice Law 2016 of Cross River State to order the seven-day remand.
The case has now been adjourned until August 19, 2026, when the court is expected to receive a report on the matter.
Odama's arrest had generated reactions after he was reportedly picked up by police in Lagos over allegations that he had “bullied” Governor Otu on social media.
He was subsequently moved from Lagos to Calabar, where he was expected to face the Magistrates’ Court.
Odama has previously been described as a satirical critic of the Cross River State Government, with his social media posts often focusing on issues of governance and development in the state.
The latest court order means the businessman will remain in custody pending the next court date.
More details are expected to emerge as proceedings continue on August 19.
