A boat collision in the Ikang axis of Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State has left eight passengers feared drowned, while five others were rescued alive.
The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
According to the Police, the incident occurred on September 6, 2026, at about 12:14 p.m., when a W23 speed boat carrying 13 Nigerian passengers was travelling from Ikang towards the Republic of Cameroon through Cameroon territorial waters around the Tikoro area.
The boat reportedly collided with another W23 speed boat fitted with a double Yamaha engine.
Following the collision, eight of the passengers were feared to have drowned, while five others were rescued with the assistance of local fishermen in Cameroon.
The Police said the bodies of those feared drowned were later brought to Simon Beach in Ikang, Bakassi LGA.
The Marine Police in Ikang has been directed to ensure that the recovered bodies are properly identified by their respective families before being deposited at the morgue.
The Command said it is also liaising with relevant authorities and affected families as efforts continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the boat collision.
The Police added that further information would be released as verified details become available.
