The Cross River State Police Command has clarified the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a 10-year-old girl who was found within the Etagbo Layout area of Calabar.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) said the girl, identified as Peace Usua Udom, was brought to the Police Station by some members of the public who found her within the area covered by the station.
According to the police, the girl was attended to by officers upon arrival and was subsequently transferred to the Social Welfare Department on September 5, 2026, for appropriate care, protection and custody.
The Command, however, stressed that no report or allegation of rape was made to the Police at the time the girl was brought to the station.
The police statement was issued following reports alleging that the girl had been found abandoned, weak and unable to speak, before she allegedly disclosed that she had been raped by three “Skolombo” boys around the CUDA area.
The reports further alleged that she was taken to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), where she received food, an injection and medication, but was reportedly not admitted because a Police Extract was required.
However, the Police Command said the alleged rape was not part of the initial report presented to officers when the child was received.
“It is important to clarify that no report or allegation relating to rape was made or brought to the attention of the Police at the time the victim was received at the station,” the PPRO said.
The Command therefore noted that the alleged rape did not form part of the circumstances initially reported to the Police.
The police confirmed that the child had been handed over to the Social Welfare Department for appropriate care, protection and custody.
