Soldiers of the Nigerian Army’s 13 Brigade, Calabar, have taken control of two communities in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State following renewed unrest in the area.
The affected communities are Boje and Isobendighe, where the military deployment followed growing security concerns and reported tension among residents.
The development has heightened concern among residents as security personnel intensify their presence in the communities in an effort to prevent further escalation.
The deployment comes against the backdrop of recurring security challenges in parts of Boki, a border local government sharing an international boundary with Cameroon.
The latest development is particularly significant given the security pressures that have affected other communities in the area this year. In June, for instance, an incident involving Cameroonian military personnel in Danare, another Boki border community, triggered concern among residents and calls for stronger protection of Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
The Nigerian Army had said the Danare incident was contained after its troops engaged the Cameroonian authorities, while further military-level discussions were initiated to strengthen coordination along the border.
The current takeover of Boje and Isobendighe by Nigerian troops therefore adds to the growing security concerns surrounding communities in Boki.
Residents are expected to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as the military works to restore stability.
The situation also places renewed attention on the need for sustained security presence, dialogue with affected communities and prompt intervention by the Cross River State and Federal Governments to prevent local disputes from developing into prolonged conflicts.
