"Ugep and Idomi Are Brothers" — Group Urges End to Bloody Land Dispute

A group known as the Yakurr Peace Assembly has praised the Cross River State Government for the steps taken to restore peace between Ugep and Idomi communities in Yakurr Local Government Area.

The group said the state government's quick intervention helped to stop the crisis from getting worse and prevented more loss of lives and property. 

In a statement signed by its Coordinator, Mr. Ubi Eyong, the group described Ugep and Idomi as communities that have lived together for many years and share the same history, culture, language and family ties.

According to the group, the two communities are like brothers, and the long-running conflict has brought pain to many families. They said there should be no permanent division between people who have lived together for generations. 

The group also thanked Governor Bassey Otu and the Cross River State Government for taking steps to calm tensions. Earlier this year, the government held several peace meetings, imposed a temporary curfew when violence increased, and later carried out a boundary demarcation exercise to reduce disagreements over the disputed land. 

However, the Yakurr Peace Assembly said peace can only last if the root cause of the dispute is properly addressed. It therefore called on the government to establish an independent boundary commission to thoroughly investigate the history of the land dispute and recommend a fair and lasting solution that both communities can accept. 

The group appealed to youths, traditional rulers, community leaders and residents of both Ugep and Idomi to avoid violence, reject rumours capable of causing fresh attacks, and continue to support peaceful dialogue.

They expressed hope that with understanding, fairness and cooperation, both communities can return to living together peacefully and focus on development instead of conflict.
