Thousands of students hoping to study Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry and Medical Laboratory Science at the University of Calabar [UNICAL] have been left disappointed after the institution announced that it will not admit new students into the three programmes for the 2026/2027 academic session.

The announcement was made through an urgent public notice signed by the university's Registrar, Dr. (Mrs.) Chukwuka Icha. According to the notice, all candidates who chose UNICAL as their first-choice institution for any of the affected courses have been advised to immediately visit the nearest JAMB office to process a change of institution before the end of July.

Although the university did not clearly explain the reason behind the suspension in its official statement, reports indicate the decision is linked to admission irregularities affecting the programmes. The university also noted that it is not the only institution affected, as three other universities are reportedly facing similar restrictions.

UNICAL urged prospective students and parents not to rely on rumours circulating on social media but to follow only information released through the university's official communication channels and JAMB.

The development is expected to affect many candidates who have spent months preparing to gain admission into the university's highly competitive medical programmes. Many will now have to seek admission into other universities if they hope to study the affected courses this year.
